Lake Allatoona History
Being the oldest multipurpose project in the South Atlantic Division. On August 18, 1941 and December 22, 1944 it was authorized under the Flood Control Acts for the purposes of flood control and hydroelectric generation. The flood control acts (1944) also authorized the construction of recreation facilities. The impoundments of the project began in 1949 and was completed and operational in 1950. The total cost for construction, land, clearing and relocation for Lake Allatoona was $31.5 million.The project has a 1,110 square miles of drainage area. There are 688 Corps of Engineers campsites and 453 picnic sites along the lake. Additional facilities are found in the surrounding cities and counties parks.
